Reiki is an ancient Japanese energy healing technique which brings balance to the body, mind and spirit. It helps to greatly reduce stress, anxiety and pain, and calms the mind.

“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing.

Reiki can be enjoyed by anyone in the normal course of their life. It can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatment and is a safe and soothing treatment. There is no need to remove clothing. Recipients lie on a couch or sit comfortably and the Reiki practitioner will gently place their hands on or near the body in a series of non-intrusive positions, allowing the Reiki energy to flow.

There is no massage or manipulation. The whole person is treated rather than specific areas and everyone experiences Reiki differently depending on their individual needs at the time. Benefits can include deep relaxation promoting a calm, peaceful sense of wellbeing on all levels. Some people feel sensations of heat, tingling, or experience seeing colours, whilst others can have an emotional response, indicating that shifts are taking place, allowing harmony to be restored.

This can be particularly helpful to people at difficult times in their lives, bringing feelings of peace and an ability to cope more easily with challenges. It’s great during pregnancy, as the treatments are relaxing and calming for the mother-to-be.

Reiki is often said to be very comforting. An interesting study reported that recipients frequently feel that they are hovering in a threshold state of consciousness, simultaneously aware of their surroundings and deeply in-drawn. Some people fall into a deep, sleep-like meditative state. Sometimes the experience of Reiki is dramatic, while for other people, the first session in particular may be uneventful, although they feel somehow better afterward. The most common experience is an almost immediate release of stress and a feeling of deep relaxation.

Reiki is cumulative and even people who don’t notice much the first time usually have progressively deeper experiences if they continue. Besides the immediate experience of the Reiki, you may notice other changes that continue to unfold as the day goes on: perhaps stronger digestion, a sense of being more centred and poised and less reactive, and sleeping deeply that night.
